Summary

Face your demons。。。 or feed them。

The dashing young king, Nikolai Lantsov, has always had a gift for the impossible。 No one knows what he endured in his country's bloody civil war--and he intends to keep it that way。 Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, Nikolai must find a way to refill Ravka's coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army。

Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built。 With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha general, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him。 He will risk everything to save his country and himself。 But some secrets aren't meant to stay buried--and some wounds aren't meant to heal。

This book started a tad slow but once it’s gets going。。。wow! The push and pull between Zoya and Nikolai and the development of those characters was fantastic。 I really enjoyed this book and the ending has me so looking forward to the next book。

This story took many surprising twists and turns。 It was nice to see characters from Six of Crows, also heartbreaking at times。 Lovely deep and emotionally complicated story。 Author is able to weave some difficult themes into this fantasy world which makes it a very rich and satisfying read。 Counting the days until #2 :)

At this point, I’m convinced Leigh Bardugo could write a phone book, and I’d devour it。

4。5 starsWhew。 This book was a journey。 I sort of have mixed feelings about it, but my love for the grishaverse in general sort of takes over。 On the one hand, the first half of this book felt super slow。 I got the ending spoiled, so one of the main reasons I sort of forced myself to go on was because of that。 On the other hand, the second half of the book was amazing。 It was so fast-paced and I loved reading everyone's different stories。 Overall, the story itself was really good, but it was ma 4。5 starsWhew。 This book was a journey。 I sort of have mixed feelings about it, but my love for the grishaverse in general sort of takes over。 On the one hand, the first half of this book felt super slow。 I got the ending spoiled, so one of the main reasons I sort of forced myself to go on was because of that。 On the other hand, the second half of the book was amazing。 It was so fast-paced and I loved reading everyone's different stories。 Overall, the story itself was really good, but it was mainly the characters that I've grown to love that made me enjoy this book so much。 I loved Nikolai right from the start, as I'm sure many people have。 Zoya, on the other hand, I really only started to like in Ruin and Rising。 Nina was one of my favorites in Six of Crows, second only to Kaz。 Having these characters made the story so much more enjoyable to read。 In the end, I really enjoyed reading this book and I cannot wait until Rule of Wolves comes out, especially since you know who is back ;p。 (As of today, only six more days!) 。。。more

I love that Bardugo is delving into more complex topics in this book, specifically by getting into the more religious aspects of the Grishaverse。 But this book just didn't click with me in the same way the others had。 I think I just felt like some of the fun adventure aspects of the other books weren't in this one, and were instead exchanged for more intellectual (?) or moral (?) pursuits and questions。 It really picked up in the second half though, and I'm excited for the new book! 3。5/5There was a whole lotta nothing going on for most of this book。 Luckily, I'm definitely a character person instead of plot, so I still managed to enjoy this book despite how boring the first half was。Zoya, Nina, and Genya are my faves and they were iconic in this book。 Nina's story was kind of,,, eh until the last third but I just love her sm。 And hearing her frequently mention Matthias, Inej, Kaz, and her time in Ketterdam really made this book worthwhile。I think this book could have been 3。5/5There was a whole lotta nothing going on for most of this book。 Luckily, I'm definitely a character person instead of plot, so I still managed to enjoy this book despite how boring the first half was。Zoya, Nina, and Genya are my faves and they were iconic in this book。 Nina's story was kind of,,, eh until the last third but I just love her sm。 And hearing her frequently mention Matthias, Inej, Kaz, and her time in Ketterdam really made this book worthwhile。I think this book could have been like 100 pages shorter and not really lost anything。 I'm really hoping Rule of Wolves is more interesting。Note: the triggers in this book were unexpected and really difficult to read。 Miscarriage, harm to pregnant women, child marriage, etc。 Please look up triggers before reading 。。。more

3。5 stars (but a goodreads 4 because it DID make me shed an ACTUAL TEAR, which a book has not done in a very long time for me)The beginning was so strong, but I really got lost along the way。 The two different plot lines didn’t flow —I felt like I was reading two different books, and the flip between those POVS was a little jarring。 I did really love the characters, and I understood why it was written the way it was from a storytelling perspective, so I still have mixed feelings about this one。。 3。5 stars (but a goodreads 4 because it DID make me shed an ACTUAL TEAR, which a book has not done in a very long time for me)The beginning was so strong, but I really got lost along the way。 The two different plot lines didn’t flow —I felt like I was reading two different books, and the flip between those POVS was a little jarring。 I did really love the characters, and I understood why it was written the way it was from a storytelling perspective, so I still have mixed feelings about this one。。。more thoughts to come on the grishaverse readalong liveshow, so be there!! I always find it difficult to write reviews for the books in the Grishaverse series。 And it’s not because I don’t have what to say, but because it’s hard to talk about them without getting into spoilers, as the story line, the character interactions with one another, secrets and surprises we get - are the very best things about these books。 However, I will do my best to talk about this book, without actually talking about it。 First of all, I really enjoyed the fact that Leigh Bardugo chose the S I always find it difficult to write reviews for the books in the Grishaverse series。 And it’s not because I don’t have what to say, but because it’s hard to talk about them without getting into spoilers, as the story line, the character interactions with one another, secrets and surprises we get - are the very best things about these books。 However, I will do my best to talk about this book, without actually talking about it。 First of all, I really enjoyed the fact that Leigh Bardugo chose the Six of Crows writing approach for the King of Scars too and gave us multiple POV’s。 There is nothing more that I enjoy more in fantasy adventure novels than the ability of being a part of all the action, especially when things are happening simultaneously in different parts of the world, as well as, getting to know the characters and their thoughts on the deepest possible level。 Anyhow, giving us multiple points of view, also means that the book, which was supposed to concentrate on the life of Nikolai Lantsov, didn’t have nearly enough Nikolai in it, for my liking。 On a more positive note, I really learned to appreciate Zoya, if anything, I would say that just in a matter of a few chapters, she became my favorite character of the book。 She has a very strong, unapologetic personality。 And I truly think that if Zoya would have been a character released in a fantasy book 30 years ago, she would be dragged by other, secondary characters, for being a bitch or would be downgraded to a strong, but spiteful character or even a villain。 But in this book, Zoya and her non compromising attitudes are being celebrated。 While she is not perceived as kind or loving, she is respected by her friends for being loyal and brave and for having clear, unselfish goals and motivations。 Moreover, when I got a glimpse to her past, I fell for Zoya even more, as I understood her better than I understood any of the other Shadow and Bones characters。 The only somewhat negative thing I could (and I guess should) point out about this book is that the first half of the book is rather slow。 When reading Leigh Bardugo books, I’m used to super fast pace, the never ending adventure, the constant surprise。 I’m used to having to sit on the edge of my seat, not knowing what’s going to happen next。 And yet, the first half of the King of Scars, felt like an eternity to read。 And when I think about things that happened in that half of the book, I can’t really see anything that could not be covered during the first 50 pages。 Which was honestly a bit of a disappointment, as I was already starting to think that the whole book will be just like that。 I was so happy to be wrong。 I adored the ending of the book。 Once the action picked up, it never settled down again。 When reading, I was worried, I was creeped out and most of all, I was very much entertained。 Now that I’m puting King of Scars back on the shelf, I can say with certainty that I will not be able to relax until I get to read how this story continues with Rule of Wolves。 。。。more

Oh wow, I enjoyed this book even more than I thought I would。 It made me love Nikolai even more than I had before, and it also made Zoya move higher on my list of favorite characters。 Nina, of course, is just perfect and is one of the best characters in the Grishaverse in my opinion。 Almost every chapter held a new surprise, and it was hard to put down because if I set it aside to watch my show, it would just leave me thinking about what was going to happen next and I would keep reading。 I'm rea Oh wow, I enjoyed this book even more than I thought I would。 It made me love Nikolai even more than I had before, and it also made Zoya move higher on my list of favorite characters。 Nina, of course, is just perfect and is one of the best characters in the Grishaverse in my opinion。 Almost every chapter held a new surprise, and it was hard to put down because if I set it aside to watch my show, it would just leave me thinking about what was going to happen next and I would keep reading。 I'm really excited for Rule of Wolves - one week! 。。。more

Nikolai, Nina, The Darkling, Matthias。 These are my favorite characters from the Grisha universe。 I was excited to read this book because two of the storylines it followed were Nikolai and Nina。Most of the way through, at the beginning definitely, I was bored。 I felt like I had to force myself to read。 But there were still those scenes with Nikolai。 And I just love him。 But even Nina’s storyline wasn’t holding my attention。But that ending! I loved the plot-twist; the return of the darkling, the true Shu princess, and Elizabeta’s betrayal。- as always the characters are very lovable/admirable, especially Nikolai (duh), Zoya (ok character development), and Nina。 - Zoya!!! Her power!!! Love how hard she works for it too and that we got more of her backstory。 Also eowww her merging with the dragon is fireeeee。 A Sheeeesh ok so I can’t decide between 4 stars and 3。5 stars but here are some scattered thoughts for you <3Pros:- the ending! Especially Nikolai + Zoya teleporting or whatever that was- New characters to love! Hanne, Leoni, etc。 Cons:- it got a bit boring, maybe it was the pacing? It could also be bc there was basically two stories in one (Nikolai/Nina) which made it hard to really engross myself into one of them - there could’ve been perhaps a bit more romance (+ speaking of romance I’m absolutely crushed about Isaak’s death, especially since the girl he fell in love with ended up being a guard too ;( but that’s not a con that’s just a mini rant)- writing could be a bit more descriptiveIn general I liked a lot of specific parts but it did take me kind of a while to finish the book, I think it definitely could’ve been more interesting especially when put up against fire books like Six of Crows。 。。。more

I'm gonna be honest, it's been a while since I've read Shadow and Bones, so, I found I couldn't remember all of Alina's companions。 But, as the story went on I managed to place the important ones。 The plot was also interesting。 The demon inside Nikolai is plaguing him and naturally he has to act。 Therefore, with the help of Zoya, he sets out to find a cure。 All the while, trying to figure out how to beat his neighbors or stop them from invading Ravka。 The love Nikolai has for Ravka is very palpa I'm gonna be honest, it's been a while since I've read Shadow and Bones, so, I found I couldn't remember all of Alina's companions。 But, as the story went on I managed to place the important ones。 The plot was also interesting。 The demon inside Nikolai is plaguing him and naturally he has to act。 Therefore, with the help of Zoya, he sets out to find a cure。 All the while, trying to figure out how to beat his neighbors or stop them from invading Ravka。 The love Nikolai has for Ravka is very palpable。 He loves Ravka like a parent would a child and I started to respect him a lot as a leader。 Zoya, also, has her own emotional journey。 She feels great regret and confusion for his love of the Darkling。 There are also traumas in her childhood that explains why Zoya is the way she is。 I felt much closer to her after reading her story。 I, also, enjoyed how she wasn't nice and she wasn't sorry for it。 There's so much stigma about women with an attitude that it was so liberating to read about a character, who, unabashedly, embraces her "unpopular" personality。I warmed to Nikolai even more after he kept saying how much he enjoyed that aspect about her。 He never complains about how hard around the edges Zoya is and in fact he appreciates it。 Confident men that aren't intimidated but strong women, are just。。。 sigh! The growing relationship between Zoya and Nikolai is adorable, too。 The companionship they show each other and the way they lean on each other is very endearing。 Their banters are very fun to read, as well。 You have emissaries to manages these matters of state," Zoya had argued, "ambassadors, underlings。""The public may forget how handsome I am。""I doubt it。 Your face is on the money。" Nina, I think, is amazing。 It wasn't enough to fall in love with a Fjerdan and change his mind about the Grisha, now she wants to save all of Fjerdan from prejudice。 It was beautiful to read about her journey。 And about how she took her grief and molded it into something that's going to change the world。Her budding romance interest was very surprising since she is (view spoiler)[ Brum's daughter。 Like okay that's a plot twist。 Really, Brum's gonna go ballistic when he realizes that Nina Zenik not only has scarred him for life, seduced his adopted son, but she has also bewitched his daughter。 Can we all give Nina a clap and ask Kaz Brekker's thoughts on this?
